Belfast — The Camden Hills wrestling team got the new season off on the right foot Saturday by winning the season-opening seventh annual Belfast Crossover Duals tournament.

The event attracted Camden Hills, Belfast, Bucksport, Skowhegan, Erskine Academy of South China, Gardiner, Medomak Valley and a Gold team, which consisted of a mixture of all the team's non-varsity wrestlers and some independents.

The Windjammers had four first-place finishers, including Coleman Powers (103 pounds), Zach Fields (135), Brandon Rich (140) and Jacob Powers (152). The Powers, who are brothers, finished 10-0 overall during the tourney.

The format of the event included each team facing off in dual-meets with other squads. Then the top wrestlers in each weight division from those dual-meets moved on to the second portion of the tourney. It is in that championship portion that wrestlers, and their teams, earned points.

When all was said and done Saturday, the team scores were: Camden Hills 196, Belfast and Gardiner 184, Gold 141, Skowhegan 134, Erskine Academy 115, Medomak Valley 93 and Bucksport 91.

The duals had Pool A, which included Belfast, Erskine Academy, Skowhegan and Gold, and Pool B, which consisted of Camden Hills, Bucksport, Gardiner and Medomak Valley. Each team wrestled other squads in its pool. When the dual-meets were completed, the top two wrestlers in each weight class in Pool A and Pool B faced off for first through fourth places. The other four wrestlers in each weight class continued to wrestle for fifth through eighth places.

The tournament allowed each wrestler five matches, unlike the typical eight-man bracket in which when one loses two matches their competition for the day is complete.

Each team was awarded 12 points for each dual-meet win. Each team was awarded points for an individual wrestler's final tournament places, including 16 points for first, 12 for second, nine for third, seven for fourth, five for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and none for eighth.

Camden Hills and Medomak Valley also participated in dual-meets, with Camden Hills beating Gardiner 45-33, Bucksport 57-18 and Medomak Valley 48-6. Medomak Valley also lost to Gardiner 42-27 and Bucksport 40-34.
