Junior Matt Ulrich (Garfield, N.J.) led the USM Huskies with a 4-0 impressive showing at the 2009 Desert Duals hosted by Wartburg College in at the Flamingo Las Vegas Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ulrich earned impressive wins against Coe College, Wartburg College, Grand Canyon and Univ. of Wisconsin!
Also having a stallar day was former MCI standout Cinjin Goewey! Goewey earned a CRUCIAL pin against his Grand Canyon University opponent and recorded a 2-1 record in Las Vegas! His only loss came up a weight class, where the coaches bumped him up a weight class to utilize his pinning abilities.. Goewey now has 9 victories on the season- ALL by pin and should be the leader in pins in the NCAA New England Conference standings.
Former New Hampshire State Champion and last years High School New England Champion Cody Byrd continues to impress in his first year as he also had a very impressive weekend, earning impressive wins against Grand Canyon University and the Univ. of Wisconsin-SP.
In four dual meets, including three against top ten teams, Southern Maine earned on victory defeating Grand Canyon (Ariz.) 24-20 in its first match of the day.
Former Massabesic standout and first year Husky Alex Holland earned a KEY pin to seal the victory over the #20th ranked team in NCAA Division II! Just a little insight on how impressive the win was against Grand Canyon University- they are a program with 6 full Scholarships so a majority of their wrestlers were scholarship athletes!
The Huskies then fell to fifth-ranked Wartburg College 50-3, eighth-ranked University of Wisconsin at Stevens Point 33-15 and third-ranked Coe College 40-3.
