In December of 2000, a group of about 40 parents met at the high school cafe which is now the technology room
to discuss bringing wrestling to the school system. The original plans called for starting at the middle school
level and growing the program into the high school. The high school students got wind of this and protested saying
they wanted it offered at the high school level sooner than later. The parents and administration decided based on this
interest level to start a club team at the high school.

The boosters purchased the Edward Little Tiger wrestling mat for $2,000.00. This mat was used as a wrestling mat on one side and a tumbling mat on the other.
The parents made a trip to Winthrop to pick up the
mat which was in storage and trucked it back to Scarborough. The mat was cold and had not been unrolled for about 2 years.
In a snow storm, three parent's vehicles took each mat section slowly back to Scarborough traveling very carefully
down the interstate.
The mat was allowed to warm-up in what was known as the glass house which was then the back entrance to the gym and is now
the front entrance. The mat was cleaned and was in good shape given at that time it was over 25 years old.
A little over 20 students attended the first set of practices and by year end, about 14 survived.
The wrestling team had a few scrimmages with local teams and considering that it was a club, did ok.
After this brief season, the middle school students were offered the program and the high schools students became
assistant coaches and helped pass on the technique and fun we had with the sport.
We made plans to purchase signlets and warm-ups that year.
That first summer we had a tournament at the middle school. We borrowed the South Portland wrestling mat and had
about 100 kids wrestling. Though we made just a little profit, we knew the next summer the boosters would make
a decent profit given the overhead items had been paid.
That fall, the school board voted to sanction the program after about 50 plus parents and students attended the
school board meeting.
The next season, Paul Sullivan was hired as a coach and the team was considered a JV team and participated in a JV schedule.
We had about 17 wrestlers start and 11 finished the season. Many wrestlers had their frist wins at the Hyde School JV
tourney.
The second summer tourney was held at the middle school.
The Scarborough Wrestling Boosters (SWB) was informed that legendary coach Ted Reese was hired as head coach. Ted was
a great inspiration to the students and boost to the program and team. We wrestled a varsity schedule and did quite
well as a first year varsity program winning 7 meets. Often a new team is luck to win one meet.
That following season Cape Elizabeth HS had two wrestlers as brothers become attached wrestlers to the Scarborough program. This was
a family affair as the Lavallee family join our program.
After the 2nd year of Coach Reese stay, he was in a very serious car accident. Though he planned to coach the middle
school program, he was in serious condition. The middle school program proceeded as planned with backup parents and
staff and we had a blast. Coach Reese was recovering slowly and again encountered a serious heath crisis in cancer and
again dealt with that. When Dan Tranchemontagne pass away, Coach Reese who had Dan as an assistant at USM, decided he
had to leave the program. That year Sean Hill in the 145 lb class became the first wrestler to attend the state meet
and was selected as an alternate based on his record and his seeding in the regional meet.
The second summer tourney was held but now we renamed it the Tranch Tourney in memory of Dan Tranchemontagne who passed
away May of 2002.
The SWB had saved enough money to purchase the new black and red mat for $9,500.00. This mat was used at the NCAA national
tourney and is now the only mat in the State of Maine having been to the NCAA nationals. For this, SWB received a sizable discount.
Coach Ryan Hutchins was hired as head coach. He and Coach Reese supported our kids at all summer events like
the MaineGames and various tournaments. Coach Hutch and his wrestlers had a very successful individual record. Tony Sciarra (103) placed
the in the Class A state tourney. This was a first for the program in having a Scarborough wrestler medal at the state meet.
The fall of 2005, the school board sanctioned the middle school program with all expenses being paid by the boosters.
Pat Hughes was hired as MS coach and the team had a successful season. The team participated in 5 dual events and 2 tournaments
and had a number of medal winners.
In the 2007-2007 season, fresh from USM college wrestling, the Scarborough program was fortunate to recieve the skills of four Division III wrestlers. The skill and energy level was realized immediately
as our wrestlers learned and exhibited the latest tecnique in college and high school wrestling. These coaches included Phill Hamilton of Skowhegan as head coach and
Chris Rispoli of Londonderry, NH, Matt Guinta of Long Island, NY and Steve Young of Rochester, NY as assistants. in 2007-2008 Steve Young became the Kennebunk HS assistant coach.
In January of 2007, the first Youth Wrestling program was offered through Community Services. That winter the youth practices were held at Eight Corners School.
Forty-three (43) youth registered from grades 3 to 6. That same year the youth wrestlers participated as a team in the Youth New Englands held at Cumberland Country Civic Center along with over 1500 other wrestlers. In January 2008 the Youth program was moved to Pleasant Hill School and later to the high school. Twenty-seven (27) youth participated in the program and was offered to grades 2 to 6. Many of the prior years youth 6th graders participated in the middle school program.
2007-2008 Regional results: Brian Smailey (119) alternate, Brandon Carroll (189) 3rd, and Glen Googins (140) alternate. As an attached wrestler, Cape's Nate Lavallee (285) was a regional champ in 2008 and two-time State Champ in 2007 and 2008 and placed second at the HS New Englands held in Lowell MA.
