1st Annual Summer Wrestling Tournament Results

Saturday July 26, 2003 Scarborough hosted it first Annual Summer Wrestling Tournament at the middle school. The middle school was used since the high school is under construction. The tourney was an all day affair that started at 7am and concluded at 4.30pm. This was the first opportunity for Scarborough residents to witness a wrestling match in their town.

PLANNING

But the work and planning the Scarborough Wrestling Boosters needed to complete began this last February. Those involved in planning and executing the plan included Kevin Cox (SWB Treasurer) acting as the Tournament Director, Nancy (SWB Treasurer) and her husband David Blanchard who handled all the concessions, Peter Gordon who organized the scorers and timers for the day, and Doc Halliday (SWB President) handled security. Other critical roles included Laura Gordon as medical attendant, Jason Hill as the interface to Town Rescue and Beryl Cole who sold t-shirts and water bottles. We also had parents like Bruce Publicover who worked on the timers and scorers tables while Michael Knight worked concession, security and provided transpiration for the wrestling mats. Justin Rinfred (the dad) assisted with security, scoring, and any task that was needed during the day. Young Justin, who also wrestles, but was out with an injury, helped with the scorers tables for the day. Megan Fagnant who is the high school team manager, assisted Kevin Cox and also helped with team scoring. Paul Sullivan who was last years coach, kept match score and supported the Scarborough wrestlers. Ginny McLaughlin and Laura Ouellette created all the wrestling direction signs that were placed around the town. Finally, for the enjoyment of all, Ginny McLaughlin who played the key role as Tournament Announcer, and is a member of the Royal River Choirs, sang a duet of the National Anthem as the Colors were escorted into the gym by Andy McLaughlin, Shaun Johnson (USN), Jared Knight and Nichole Lemay of Litchfield.

WRESTLERS

The 4 female and 85 male wrestlers who competed hailed from four New England States (ME, VT, CT, MA), 41 different cities and towns, 10 of which were in Southern Maine. There were 6 divisions that included K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, high school and Open. In total, competition in 18 weigh classes yielded 216 wrestling matches. Every wrestler was guaranteed to have two matches.

INJURY

In amateur wrestling, the injury that is most common is a bloody nose. We had a few of these but a wrestler-coach from Ellsworth suffered what we think was a broken ankle. Scarborough rescue was notified by Jason Hill. What everyone noticed was how quickly rescue had the injured wrestler on his way to medical care. And Andy McLaughlin in the high school division landed on his leg in an awkward position and injured his leg. Other than these two incidents, the day was uneventful.

BOOSTERS

The boosters did very well their first year and many people that included coaches and parents commented on the organization and fun everyone had. The tournament was delayed about 30 minutes due to some wrestling officials that did not show up as planned. However there were three board certified wrestling officials present. Dennis Bishop president of Maine's wrestling officials board (MIWOA), Dennis Hanson of Dixfield and John Cole of Scarborough were able get the meet underway. And one interesting opportunity SWB offered was "ref for a day" where anyone over 18 could ref a few matches under the guidance of the board officials. There were four of these folks. Shaun John (USN) who wrestled men's open was one of these people who enjoyed the first time experience. Originally Shaun grew up in Ft Laudable FL, wrestled in high school, and is now stationed at NASB with his wife.

FIRSTS

The tournament marked several firsts for Scarborough: 1st wrestling meet, 1st tournament, 1st time Coach Ted Reese could coach his wrestlers in live competition, and 1st time we had wrestlers that medaled in home competition. John Publicover took a 1st in the grade school divison, Jared Knight took a 4th in the high division, Ryan Hutchins took 1st in the men's open light weight class and John Cole took a 2nd in the men's open heavy weight division. Scarborough high school wrestlers included Geoffrey Blanchard, Sean Hill, Colin Susca, Mike Perry, Jared Knight, and Andy McLaughlin. The grade school wrestlers included John Publicover, James Publicover, Justin Halliday, and Eric Leinonen. We also had former Scarborough wrestler, now a Windham student Kyle Hillock competing.

COACH REESE

As Scarborough residents and students are learning this summer, Coach Reese has been conducting wrestling clinics every Tuesday and Thursday at the high school cafe. These young wrestlers all competed in the Saturday tournament which tested their knowledge and skills. Other schools have discovered that Coach Reese was the summer clinician and have enrolled their kids in the community services sponsored program to get the exposure to Coach's knowledge and technique. Presently, wrestlers from Portland, Biddeford, Kennebunk, and Hyde have joined the Scarborough wrestlers as they learn from the best in Coach Reese. Every wrestler that has been attending these sessions now knows what it means to be able to complete just one of Coach's pushups, not to mention such moves as The Russian, Special nelson, and Shultz's ankle. And just recently Coach introduced a strength building routine known a Sticks. It so happens many wrestlers who have been coached by Coach Reese have this one very intense activity in common and immediately have a family like connection. For example a wrestler from the 1985 Bonny Eagle team was happy to share his memories of Sticks with some of our high school wrestlers who competed at the Noble Midnight tourney a few weeks ago. At that Tourney, Mike Perry placed 4th while demonstrating just how much improvement in his technique he had made since February of this year.

SPORTS CROSSOVER

During the day, parents could be heard discussing how the tourney was progressing, certain matches or how wrestling has tremendous cross-over of athletic skills for sports like cross country, football, track, and rugby. Mostly, as the parents pointed out, it has to do with improving intensity, balance and presence of mind. Parents who have children in football and wrestling have noticed a marked positive change in their overall skills as athletes because of what they learn in wrestling and the benefits a wrestler gets from sports like cross country, football and rugby.

WHAT IS NEXT

The SWB learned a lot about handling a tournament and conducting a meet which will happen at the high school level this coming winter season. First practice for the high school season starts November 18 at the high school cafe.

What is next for Scarborough Wrestling Boosters? In August they will participate in the Scarborough Summer-fest event, will be at Wal-Mart over Labor Day weekend selling food and washing cars, and finally for 2003 will be holding a bottle drive.

If you missed the fun, mark your calendar: July 24, 2004 for the 2nd Annual Scarborough Summer Wrestling Tournament.

    Special Announcement

The Scarborough Wreslting program is now known as Scarborough Wrestling. We are operating on a CLUB basis, with a PRIORITY THREE schedule for community servies, and are working to be recognized by the town of Scarborough which includes the Community services and the school system.

Our goal all along has been to become a sanctioned sport. We know this will take time and by operating as a club we will have our own insurances by USA Wrestling and coordinate with the community services and athletic director of our school system.

We may have to step back and ensure that all scheduling and knowledge of request for facilities are in proper order. This will be sought and comlpeted ASAP to be complinant with proceures.

We had planned for use of the high school cafe and to date that facility may be used by other groups. We will be working out a plan to address a practice location. More to follow this subject.

Until we get approval and are sanctioned which we are not yet, we will be known as Scarborough Wrestling Club. Any use or reference to RedStorm is an error on my part and no way associated with others and or the school system. Please accept my appologies and we will pursue correcting this item.

    High School Program

We have been hold practices on Tuesday and Friday with the idea of going to a third day and that will happen after the State Meet on Feb 9th. The wrestler are learning the ways of proper mat protocol and the technical nature of the sport. We're have a lot of fun and this bunch of young men are very eager and a pleasure to work with and coach. Our goals remains the same: the HS wrestlers will be coaching assistants. And to fill their need to compete there are tournaments we'll look at attending. Also we just beginning to discuss joining the Down East Stormers that wrestler out of USM. These are middle school, high school and college wrestlers that have a very enjoyable time of being on the mat. The USM coaching staff is present and often other coaches attend. So our plans is to link with these guys and get into the folds of fellow wrestlers. This will happen after New Englands in March.

    Middle School Program

Sam Cafone and John Cole attended the SMAA Middle School Leage coaches meeting Jan 24 at Massabesic HS. What we set and agreed to at the meeting is allowing Scarborough Meddle School wrestlers to join into tri-meets making them a double-dual (often called a quad) with four teams. We have five and potentially six meets all of which will be at Westbrook Middle School or the Portland (Deering and Portland HS). We also have two tournaments that we will enter. The entry fee per wrestler is $6.00.

We also are looking into uniforms and will agree at our meeting to the purchase of a reversable singlet that is red and blue. The keep with our team colors and will have no lettering.

Please keep in mind these are TENTATIVE dates and have to be approved by the home Atheltic Directors.

John Halladay will update us on the team shirst and sweat-shirts. This will include costs and clothing options.

One of our next steps is to promote the enrollment for the middle school wreslting program. Our plans include intro sessions with mat time and discussions for students. This looks to be over a few days and will happen the first of Feb. We have no date set and will advise when this occurs.

Just what will a middle school student and family need to provide for monies:

In order to be able to complete, these items need to be ordered and availabe ASAP so we'll jump on this by informing student during our informational meeting that we'll have at the middle school. Items will be purchased in bulk and must be pre-paid since we have limited funds.

Our middle school team has a manager and its Sam Cafone's daughter Samantha who attends the middle school. She will be a great asset to our team since she already knows the process and several techniques of our sport. Thanks Sam.

Minutes Boosters Meeting Jan 8th 2002

The moral of our Booster and Students soon to be wrestlers is one of controlled focus and energy. The students are highly motivated and most willing to undertake the work and tasks of making this wreslting program mature and come to a fully qualified sport in our town.

The findings of the Steering Committee was sharred with the Boosters. We have tentative aggreement to store mats in the auditorium and use the cafe for work out area.

We discussed implementation of the middle school program, training HS Students as volunteer coaches and the need to have a middle school boosters identified to assist in the various aspect of making our program come to life. e had several volunteer middl school parrents stepping up and offering their time and resources. A special gathering of the middle school parents will be definded so we may address teh special issues for middle school students and parents.

The HS students who have volunteered to coach-assist were introduced. These students will be meeting after school from 3-4pm on Tuesday and Fridays for a few weeks prior to starting up the middle school program. The nature of this training will include:

  • Starting with the basics being of a technical nature
  • Administration of matches and meets
  • Safty, nutrition, prevention, personal hygiene
  • Academics, being role models, citizenship, sportsmanship
  • The wrestling practice routine
  • Warming up, drilling, conditioning, weight training, cardio

Prior to our meeting earlier in the afternoon, the volunteer students extracted the mats from storage and layed them out on the basketball floor. We inspected the mat and discovered the mat was in very good condition. We do have a few spots that will require repair. We plan on having that done before the middle school program starts up.

Rasing funds was also a hot topic. We have a number of parents with special connections to the business community who we hope will help fund our programs. We agreed to set a special fund raising meeting to being the process. We also has an account with Town and Country Credit Union for our banking needs thanks to Kevin Cox.
